Mission-Driven

For people, for communities

At BlueCross, we provide health coverage for millions of Tennesseans. We’re also a tax-paying not-for-profit with a mission to serve.

Our first priority is our commitment to a healthier life for individuals, families and communities.

Employees from all over Tennessee come together each day with one mission in mind: providing peace of mind through better health.

What does it mean to be mission-driven?

Being mission-driven means we have a responsibility to be actively involved in building a better quality of life where we live, right here at home.

Our first priority is your health

We serve our members by providing high-quality, cost-effective health plans and wellness services — but access is not enough. Our nearly 900 nurses are working every day to support members and make sure they get the right care at the right time.

We also give back to the people, families and communities we serve in meaningful ways.

Here’s what our employees have to say about living our mission:

We support the services you need

By paying $450 million in local, state and federal taxes in 2019, we’ve helped pay for community programs and services. It’s one way being right here helps us make a difference.

We do this because Tennessee is our home, and has been for 75 years.

We answer to you

Why does being not-for-profit matter? We can earn lower margins than competitors, so you can pay less. And we answer directly to our members and communities.

  • We know every dollar we use comes from you, so we work hard to operate efficiently and advocate for lower health care costs
  • We typically pay more in combined local, state and federal taxes than we earn in net income
  • Our 5-year average for net income is 2.3%.
  • Those taxes help fund everything from city streets to statewide services

Being mission-driven also means taking a long-term view, and that starts with using your money responsibly, acting ethically and fostering diversity and inclusion.

Real people, real results

Caring for your health is a big responsibility, and we take it seriously. That’s why we were thrilled to receive a J.D. Power award in 2017 for member satisfaction.

Their data showed that when members contacted BlueCross, 93% had their most recent problem or question resolved.

Our top priority

We are committed to improving health and providing peace of mind for the people, families and communities we serve, right here in Tennessee.

One way we’re doing that is through BlueCross Healthy Places: outdoor spaces where children and communities can share and play together.
